Designed to retain moisture from the gas expired by the patient who's upper airway are being bypassed by an artificial airway which removes the patient's natural ability to filter, warm and moisten inspired gas.

Mechanism of Action: Patient's warm, humidified expired gas passes through the media of HMEF, water vapor condenses within the medium and is then re-used for humidification of the inspired gas.
